SUMMARY:Edtech Usage Data: Key to Planning Efficacy Research
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Denis Newman\, Co-founder\, Evidentally\, Inc.; and Kylene Shen\, VP of Marketing\, Evidentally\, Inc. \nSponsored by Evidentally\, Inc. \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe goal of this edWebinar is to illustrate how edtech vendors can better characterize their customer base and more effectively prepare for efficacy research through the analysis of their product usage data. With the advent of cloud-based edtech\, companies routinely collect overwhelming amounts of product usage data (e.g. timestamped user logins\, number of online activities completed\, and other measures of product engagement). How can you turn this data into actionable information about the nature of your customers and whether you can show that your product works? What is the optimal level of usage to get the outcomes the schools expect? Are you leveraging your usage data to your maximum benefit? \nIn this edWebinar\, walk through several examples of how different companies have used their usage data\, combined with publicly available school demographic data\, to identify and characterize school and district users that are the strongest product implementers. Learn how these data can be used to determine what kinds of efficacy studies are possible and likely to yield results\, including an analysis of edWeb’s own user base. \nThis recorded presentation is designed for edtech companies and educators interested in edtech product usage and efficacy. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Denis Newman\, lead author of the software industry’s guidelines for research on edtech impact\, is the CEO of both Empirical Education Inc. as well as Evidentally\, a spin-off research organization that conducts dozens of RCTs and other evaluations of school programs. Seleb\, Executive Director\, Oak Park Public Library\, IL; and Dr. Beth Holland\, Digital Equity Project Director\, CoSN \nProgram Host and Moderator: Ann McMullan\, Project Director\, CoSN Empowered Superintendents Initiative \nSponsored by ClassLink\nThis edWebinar series is co-hosted by CoSN and edWeb.net \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nDuring the past two decades\, efforts to provide America’s classrooms with high speed Internet access have made great progress. However\, the steady increase in the use of technology tools for learning brings with it a new digital divide between students who have home Internet access and those who do not. This “homework gap\,” often exacerbates other preexisting inequalities\, making it difficult for students to complete homework assignments. The lack of home Internet access also negatively impacts school-to-parent communication and makes it more difficult for parents to support their children academically. The promise of anywhere\, anytime learning for all students requires that schools and communities come together to close the “homework gap” and the widening disconnect that impacts parents and guardians as well. \nIn this edWebinar a school superintendent\, a district technology director and a public library director tell how they came together to address the challenges of digital equity for the students in their Illinois school district. CoSN’s Digital Equity Project Director joins the conversation to share highlights from the CoSN Digital Equity Toolkit as well as other tools and resources that school and community leaders can use to bridge the digital divide. \nThis recorded session is of special value for school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carol L. SUMMARY:The Case for Fear: Teaching Kids to Play Outside of Their Comfort Zones
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Crista Samaras\, Founder and CEO\, Brave Enterprises; and Katie Carroll\, MPH\, Research Analyst\, Brave Enterprises \nSponsored by Brave Enterprises \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn this edWebinar\, Crista Samaras\, the founder and CEO of Brave Enterprises\, and co-presenter Katie Carroll\, MPH\, Brave’s Research Analyst\, discuss the most critical element of bravery itself: Fear. \nFear is the key to the bravery conversation. Brave develops programming to provoke feelings of fear in a controlled environment so that kids can better build the tools to navigate those feelings. Where many focus only on resilience (stamina)\, Brave focuses on the practice of resourcefulness (strategy). \nLearn about the Fear Inflection Point\, a remarkable finding from Brave’s research\, that occurs for girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 13. Learning about how fears shift and change in both origin and type has influenced how we design and build the most effective programming. Girls and boys interact with fear in notably different ways\, which has helped us discover and devise a robust list of best practices to help kids practice acknowledging their fears and to learn how to take action in the face of them. \nWe include fear and bravery “workouts” as well as a system to mix and match exercises (practice plans) to keep kids engaged. The presentation consists of four major parts: \n\nFear and the comfort zone: definitions and dimensions\nFear Inflection Point\nThree ways to get more brave: girls vs. boys\nBravery and fear workouts for teens\nQ&A\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is vital to anyone who plays an important role in the life of pre-teen and teenage kids and who is eager for more ways to positively impact their ability to manage their fears and take action. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nCrista Samaras started Brave Enterprises in 2016. A graduate of Princeton University\, Crista was selected Rookie of the Year\, was a 3x All American\, 4x All Ivy League pick\, 2x Ivy League Player of the Year\, and still holds the record for number of career points at Princeton. Crista was on the US Women’s Lacrosse Team from 1995-2007 and competed in both the 2001 and 2005 World Cup Games winning gold and silver medals. In 2005\, she was twice named Player of the Match (vs. Canada and England). \nCrista coached at Yale University before she started her own lacrosse companies in 2004\, which focused on empowering female players. In the next ten years\, Crista coached thousands of junior women before she sold her teams in 2014. In 2012\, she was the interim Head Coach at the University of Richmond and led the team from a #33 national ranking to a #13 national ranking in just three months. She lives in New York City. \n \n \nKatie Carroll\, Research Analyst at Brave Enterprises\, graduated from Georgetown University in 2009\, and from The George Washington University in 2016 with a masters in public health. She came to Brave Enterprises after witnessing the character programming as a coach and experiencing the impact in her own professional and personal life. Katie examines the data generated in the live sessions to monitor\, evaluate\, and influence the growth of Brave’s programming. She lives in Baltimore\, MD. \n \nJoin the Creating a Positive School Climate community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n \n\n \n  \nBrave Enterprises is company that designs and facilitates programming to help people respond to fear with brave action. SUMMARY:Achieve Transformative Results by Teaching Academic Language
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ben Grimley\, CEO and Co-founder\, Speak Agent; Victoria Arrowsmith\, Physical Science Teacher\, South High Magnet School\, Omaha\, NB; and Wendy Xiao\, Senior Program Manager\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise\nHosted by Barbara Pape\, Communications Director\, Learner Variability Project \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nResearch has shown that academic language is the most significant barrier to success for English language learners (ELLs)\, low-income students\, minority students\, and other diverse learners. Many educators have seen firsthand how this barrier widens the achievement gap. Yet current classroom practices and resources tend to treat “academic language” as merely a series of glossary entries\, definitions\, and grammar rules to be memorized. Academic language\, however\, goes far broader and deeper than that. It’s the language of content! This edWebinar examines practices\, strategies\, and tools for teaching that specialized language\, unlocking the full potential of your students. \nAcademic language is no one’s home language. That makes us all academic language learners. So\, how can learners be encouraged to discover meaning and to master academic concepts using a language-based approach? How does one actually implement content and language integration in a real-world classroom? This edWebinar explores a new cross-disciplinary approach developed by Speak Agent\, with support from the Learner Variability Project. Viewers will: \n\nBuild an understanding of the research basis behind the new teaching approach and evidence of its efficacy in transforming learning\nLearn how education technology can help you scale and replicate success schoolwide and districtwide—without having to change your existing curriculum\nIdentify instructional strategies\, curated by the Learner Variability Project\, that you can apply immediately in the classroom—whether or not you choose to augment them with technology\nGain insights into how to address common implementation challenges\nGain knowledge of key trends and practices in English language development and the language of STEM\n\nThis recorded presentation will be of particular interest to elementary and middle-grade educators in dual-language\, ESL\, math\, reading\, and science programs\, as well as to school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nBen Grimley is the CEO and Co-founder of Speak Agent\, Inc. based in Rockville\, Maryland. SUMMARY:Our Young ELLs: Basics of Language Acquisition and Strategies for Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dena AuCoin\, Academic Chair\, Early Childhood Administration Department\, Purdue University Global \nSponsored by VIPKid \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams\, a fascinating element was the “babel fish\,” fish that when dropped into a person’s ear would provide translation of any language. Wouldn’t that be amazing? \nWhile Google translate is a great technology for translation\, it can often fail to provide accurate translation and therefore hamper communication. Communication requires much more than just being able to understand vocabulary words\, especially in early childhood. It requires understanding of word use\, expression\, and context. \nLearning a language requires time\, effort\, and patience\, which is all affected by the learning environment and situation. “How do you think children learn to talk?” This question is best explored by beginning to learn some of the foundational principles of language acquisition\, as opposed to language learning\, principles shaped primarily by Noam Chomsky and Stephen Krashen. \nThis edWebinar focuses on the basics of second language acquisition\, exploring the theories of Chomsky and Krashen\, including learner differences and development. Also dive into exploring sheltered instruction\, and share actionable strategies for building language\, promoting interaction\, and stimulating higher-order thinking. This allows educators to better support their young English language learners’ development of language. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-3 teachers and librarians. \nAbout the Presenter \nDena AuCoin is the academic chair for the early childhood administration department at Purdue University Global. She has experience as an adjunct instructor\, teacher\, special educator\, director\, and consultant in early childhood through higher education. Dena holds certifications in early childhood\, elementary\, and special education in Michigan and Arizona. She is involved in research in early transition language and self-determination for students with disabilities\, Montessori collaboration in special education\, autism social skills\, response to intervention in early childhood\, and support for students with disabilities in the Montessori classroom. Dena volunteers for a local horse farm and for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training as a triathlon coach. She is an endurance athlete and enjoys long distance events in triathlon\, running\, and cycling. Dena is also an avid reader\, yoga instructor\, and dog owner of Juneau\, a lab mix! \n  \nJoin the Helping ELL/ESL Students Succeed community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n VIPKid is a global education technology company that connects children with the world’s best teachers for real-time online English immersion learning.
