How do you move from asking students to bring in spare change to help girls in Afghanistan get an education, to helping your students understand why some children don’t get to go to school, and about the cultural, political, and economic realities of life in the developing world?
Moving from simply believing in a cause to action based on real understanding of the issues—it’s the crux that many teachers struggle with when it comes to service learning. Yet we know that with understanding comes tolerance and sympathy, and ultimately a deeper learning experience.

Alanna Brown holds a master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education and Public Administration. Before her time at Central Asia Institute, she presented at high schools across the state of Montana to encourage and recruit students to attend college. Additionally, Ms. Brown presented to large funders and state government administers to secure grant funding for various programs at Montana State University.
Currently the manager of Pennies for Peace at Central Asia Institute, Ms. Brown attends national conferences to speak about the program, and promotes the importance of education, especially for girls, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. Ms. Brown also speaks at elementary, middle and high schools across the country, and with business leaders, to encourage community involvement with Central Asia Institute’s efforts.
