The idea of integrating science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into learning centers is a relatively new concept. However, the integration of STEM in the early years exposes young children to a problem-solving approach to learning which aligns with their own curiosity. Children need time and interactions to facilitate their learning and play. Learning centers provide the perfect platform for these experiences.
In this webinar, Dr. Kelly L. Jennings-Towle, author of STEM PLAY: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers, presents on how to think more broadly about younger children’s learning options in the area of STEM. She shares:
- How to integrate STEM content naturally while young children play with materials commonly found in learning centers
- Ways to support STEM curriculum in the early childhood classroom through open-ended questions and meaningful conversations
- STEM activities and themes as well as related social-emotional development and assessment topics

About the Presenter
Dr. Kelly Jennings-Towle is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Central Florida in the College of Education and Human Performance. Kelly has been in the field of early childhood education for over 20 years. She has taught kindergarten through second grade in both Illinois and Florida. Kelly has taught at the collegiate level center on child development, children’s literature, teaching strategies, practicum, internship, and diversity for educators. Her research is in the area of teacher preparation for high-need settings and teaching with technology. Kelly assisted in developing the current Florida Teacher Certification Examination PK-3 and Birth-Age 4. She has presented at several national conferences and she has also trained teachers at local workshops.
