Leaders across the education world are facing uncharted territory during the COVID-19 crisis. Leading in a time of uncertainty requires dedication, focus, and consistency – the same skills it requires to be an elite athlete. In this edLeader Panel, hear from leaders from both the sport and education worlds to explore practical strategies and foundational research to move forward through reopening school communities. Now more than ever, educators and youth need leaders who are focused on social and emotional development to help youth thrive academically. After a brief overview of the research behind social and emotional learning, this edLeader Panel lifts up and inspire leaders to move forward as school communities are renewed.

This recorded edLeader Panel will be of interest to kindergarten through middle school teachers, librarians, counselors, and school and district leaders. 

 

Leigh PariseAbout the Presenters

Leigh Parise holds a Ph.D. in educational and social policy from Northwestern University, with a specific focus on teacher quality and professional development. Leigh is a Senior Researcher and Associate Director of Program Development at MDRC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social policy research organization focused on improving the lives of low-income individuals, families, and children. Her work at MDRC has led her to working with the Gates Foundation and school districts across the U.S. analyzing the effectiveness of programs and policies for various ages and populations. Together with her brother Steve, Leigh co-founded Classroom Champions in 2009 with the goal of inspiring kids and helping them realize their potential by pairing Olympic™ and Paralympic Athlete Mentors with teachers and students.

 

Todd NesloneyTodd Neslonely is currently the Director of Culture and Strategic Leadership at Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, a White House Champion of Change, 2x TEDx speaker, educator, and author.

 

Lex GilletteLex Gillette is the most successful completely blind long jumper and triple jumper in the history of U.S. Paralympics. He lost his sight at age eight after recurrent retinal detachments. He is the only totally blind athlete to pass the 22-foot mark in long jump. Lex is the current world record holder for long jump, a four-time Paralympic silver medalist, the reigning world champion in long jump, and a 14-time national champion. Lex also won a silver medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Lex is also an author, motivational speaker, and singer/songwriter.

 

Ella MayaElla Maya is a 6th grade teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, a dog-mom to Pepper, winner of the Arizona Diamondbacks Most Valuable Teacher Award, and an educator who believes in building lasting and meaningful connections with her students and their families. This is Ella’s sixth year in Classroom Champions and it is without a doubt that Ella’s students year after year, truly feel a connection with Ms. Maya.
