All students have the potential to grow and develop academically. However, some practices in U.S. educational systems reflect inequitable approaches for educating students. Educational equity is impacted by many contributing factors such as race, gender, socio-economic status, language proficiency, learning disability status, and other social and cultural factors. Students who hold unique identities should receive an adequate amount of resources, human capital, instructional time, and social support to ensure that they are learning and growing at their fullest potential. What can teachers and administrators do to promote equity in schools and classrooms? What practices should be examined and challenged as inequitable?

In this edWebinar, we explore a variety of policies and practices that aim to address the foundational challenges of achieving educational equity in the United States. We also highlight ways educators can address equity in their school systems.

About the Presenter

Steven Almazan currently serves as an independent consultant. He supports equity-aligned organizations focused on education policy and advocacy issues. He most recently served as the managing director of external affairs with Educators for Excellence – Los Angeles, where he led the external affairs strategy, executed media relations, conducted policy analyses, and developed coalitions with diverse stakeholders. Steven received his dual bachelor’s degree in communication and psychology from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in special education from Loyola Marymount University, and a Master of Public Policy degree in Public Policy Analysis from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.

Anurima Bhargava is the founder and president of Anthem of Us, a strategic advisory firm promoting dignity and justice in the building of our schools, workplaces, and communities. From 2010-2016, she led federal civil rights enforcement in schools and institutions of higher education at the U.S. Department of Justice. In December 2018, Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed her U.S. Commissioner on International Religious Freedom. Anurima is Senior Advisor to Whiteboard Advisors and on the Advisory Board for the National Student Legal Defense Program Network. She chairs the board of Doc Society and co-chairs the National Advisory Board on Public Service at Harvard. After leaving the Justice Department in 2016, she served as a fellow at the Open Society Foundations, and the Institute of Politics and the Carr Center for Human Rights at Harvard. She graduated from Columbia Law School and Harvard College. Anurima grew up on the south side of Chicago.
