School is a series of challenges. Every assignment, project, presentation, and assessment is a challenge; however, not all students understand why they are doing these challenges and how to persist when the challenge becomes difficult. To help students take charge of challenges, Jay Jackson helps educators lead class discussions regarding necessary character traits including self-awareness, integrity, purpose, passion, positive mindset, courage, commitment, and grit.

Jay’s process uses simple tools that educators can use to foster deep and meaningful discussions about the aforementioned character traits, being very intentional about why and how to take on challenges without taking too much class time away from content. If your students need to improve their grit, this process aids in helping students understand how they can be successful and happy by taking charge of challenges. In this edWebinar, viewers:

  • Learn to use tools to lead important student-led discussions about how students can best take on challenges to lead to success and happiness
  • Use tools to reflect on their own practices in the classroom regarding taking on challenges
  • Hear about areas that affect how students and teachers approach challenges, including self-awareness, integrity, purpose, passion, positive mindset, courage, commitment, grit, and flow
  • Brainstorm lesson ideas that teach content but also allow students to reflect on the character trait above that the educator wants to emphasize

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school leaders.

About the Presenter

Jay Jackson is an educator at Fremont Unified School District and has been a teacher or administrator since 2002. Before becoming an educator, he served for seven years as the Assistant Wrestling Coach at Stanford University. His focus in education is to help students become more successful and happier versions of themselves as they take on challenges. He accomplishes this by using simple tools that, when coupled with questions, allow him to integrate concepts of sports psychology into academic classes. These tools promote student introspection on how they can best achieve peak performance while remaining joyful.
