“Ordinary people who know nothing of phonetics or elocution have difficulties in understanding slow speech composed of perfect sounds, while they have no difficulty in comprehending an imperfect gabble if only the accent and rhythm are natural.”

The Mechanism of Speech, by Alexander Graham Bell

Accents are natural. And a foreign accent can sound interesting, but not if communication is unintelligible. Any pronunciation practice should aim at helping the learner produce intelligible speech and be successful at perceiving it. The goal of this edWebinar is to provide participants with techniques, strategies, and practical ideas about how to improve their English language learners’ (ELL) pronunciation using pedagogical tools that enhance natural English stress, intonation and rhythm in connected speech.

Teachers will learn how to raise learners’ awareness of their pronunciation and support them as they work to increase naturalness in spoken English. Attendees will take home tools that will promote their learners’ intelligibility (the extent to which a speaker’s message is actually understood by a listener) and comprehensibility (the accuracy with which a speaker’s intended meaning is perceived).

This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and librarians at all levels.
