Preetom Bhattacharya from the Huntington Beach City School District, CA, presents the value of language-learning programs during out-of-school time. Limited time and resources during the school day reduce access to language learning that develops skills students need to engage in a global society. Educators can develop or expand after-school programs to increase students’ access to language learning.

Our students are already part of the most globally interconnected population in human history. When students graduate, they should be equipped with the skills to communicate and collaborate cross-culturally. K-12 language programs can help foster a generation prepared to enter the global society, while also allowing students to reap the cognitive and academic benefits that result from language learning.

Learning another language can help develop students’ cognitive skills, resulting in higher achievement in other academic areas, and help increase their standardized test scores. Bilingualism can improve students’ mental flexibility and working memories, and give them the ability to grasp abstract concepts better than their monolingual peers. Additionally, increasing proficiency with a new language has been shown to improve student proficiency in their primary language.

After-school, before-school, and summer programs provide the perfect enriched learning opportunity to offer students access to language learning, while also complementing the teaching and learning that takes place during the school day.

Watch this edWebinar to learn:

  • Why using this time to implement language learning makes sense
  • How to implement an out-of-school language-learning program
  • Effective strategies to increase student engagement

With well-planned access to language programs, today’s students can become tomorrow’s world leaders, functioning well across languages and cultures as successful members of a global society. K-12 educators are invited to watch to learn how to implement an after-school language-learning program that is fun and engaging for both students and staff.
