In a time when budgets are tight and schedules are even tighter, educators must be creative and agile as we seek ways to connect with families and fortify the essential home-community-school relationship that best supports kids. Schools must differentiate outreach efforts to meet families where they are – in the same way teachers must differentiate for students with diverse needs.
April brings us a month of celebrating our families and friends with Autism. It is AWARENESS about Autism, that each person with a diagnosis is a unique individual who is a brother, sister, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, neighbor, student, or friend.
Implementation doesn’t come with a download. Whether your student is using a free AAC app, a simple app, a complex app, or an app that costs hundreds of dollars, student and partner strategies probably aren’t as easy as the click was to install the app. Well there is no need to get discouraged and think that you have to download another app to get to AAC utopia!

One of the critical Common Core skills is to summarize the main ideas contained in a text. Writing a crisp summary depends upon distinguishing key ideas from details. This month, edWeb community, Instructional Strategies for Reading Improvement K-8, hosted a webinar providing strategies for helping students improve their abilities to write and understand the components of summaries.

Between cell phones and tablets, it seems that nearly every student has access to a video camera today. This month, edWeb community, Mobile Learning Explorations, held a webinar about using video to enhance student learning. Webinar presenter, Richard Byrne, Digital Learning Consultant for Free Technology for Teachers, shared some of the ways that attendees’ students can demonstrate knowledge of content and process – through the use of free video creation apps and web tools.

Various technology options are available for the teacher, all the way from selection and formatting of questions to delivery through PowerPoint presentations, software for interactive whiteboards, teacher or school web pages, or any handheld device (smartphones and tablets).
