For every teacher, it’s different, but you know who they are for you – the students who are “hard to teach.” Maybe they’re reading far below grade level. Maybe they’re English learners. Maybe they have diagnosed learning disabilities or behavioral issues. Maybe they’re underachieving for reasons that are unknown. They have been overlooked, underserved, or frustrated, and they’re not learning as they should. Until now. Until you.
In this webinar, Doug Fisher presented a thoughtful and practical approach to achieving breakthrough success with linguistically and culturally diverse students who struggle in school. Combining elements of the SIOP® Model and the FIT Teaching® approach, Doug shared how he and his fellow authors Jana Echevarría and Nancy Frey have taken stock of what we know about excellent instruction and distilled it into five guiding principles. Based on their book, How to Reach the Hard to Teach: Excellent Instruction for Those Who Need It Most, Doug walked through each of these guiding principles to support struggling students:
- Set high expectations
- Provide equitable access to the core curriculum through differentiation
- Use ongoing assessment and real-time data to inform instruction
- Attend to language development – both English and academic
- Create a supportive classroom climate
Learn specific practices associated with each principle and how to employ these practices in your classrooms, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn and to receive optimal support for their learning. Dr. Douglas Fisher is the Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College in San Diego, California.
